Limiting Homework
By Dallas Salas

Teachers give homework to make sure students understand the topic they are being taught. The definition of homework is to work or study done in preparation for a certain event or situation. There are many advantages to doing homework, however, they have disadvantages when teachers or professors give an excessive amount of homework. Studys have shown that homework can be useless if the assignments are repeitive.

Homework should be limited because when students have too much homework they end up staying awake late at night trying to complete their assignments. Later on, this lack of sleep causes health issues and mental health isssues. A Stanford education researcher found that too much homework can negatively affect kids, especially their lives away from school, where family, friends, and activities matter. Teachers may believe homework could be helpful, however; too much can make students performance levels drop tremendously.

In addition, too much homework cuts into family time and, make family members stress along side the student. Homework can be a flowing amount of energy being wasted because most homework teachers give students is more than two hours unless you’re in elementary school. “Homework is a constant irritant, a badge of honor, and a face in the family in academically ambitious Westchester. Molly says. "But I don't think it's too overwhelming." She explained the strain of homework weighs more heavily on her mother. "I didn't feel [stressed] until I was in my 30s," says Libby, 43. "It hurts my feelings that my daughter feels that way at 11". For students to be experiencing stressful experiences that others faced at other ages, that's not fair to our future generations." Furthermore, the new generation shouldn't have more stress, we should learn from our mistakes not to endure them.

Many people, believe that homework teaches you responsibility, they are completely accurate, it does. Homework can teach children to be responsible by giving them the foundation of accountability and time management, both of which are cornerstones of responsibility. Homework needs to be completed, regardless of personal thoughts for or against. However, would you rather students learn responsibility and not fully comprehend their assignments in and out of class? Or, fully comprehend their assignments plus still learn responsibility, while doing less homework? In the spand of 10 minutes times thier grade level. Others think that when students are not assigned a lot of homework they are not being taught responsibility and time management. Although, that's an inaccurate conception student can do less homework and still understand the topic at hand.
Lastly, too much homework can cause more harm than good. Homework can not help students when it's hurting students at the same time. Many of the brightest students argue that homework is vital to understanding a course, but when there is so much, it poses more harm than good. Many children begin school with lots of joy and excitement then, they begin to stress and worry about circumstances out of control as well as homework. After a week of struggling through late nights of endless homework, Greenfeld can't help but question how students can stay excited about school. Finally, this is a crucial key for the next generation and we need to move away from excessive homework.

In conclusion, I feel as though homework today should be limited to 10 minutes times ther grade level, for example if a student is in the 10th grade they may endure an 1 hour and 40 minutes worth of assignments because usually homework now is at least two to three hours long. This is very unacceptable for this generation today. Lastly, I conclude with saying, repetitive long homework leads to stress, anxiety, and grief that leads to students feeling depressed or less than themselfs. Or, those who deal with high amounts of stress when they are young leads them to have more stress when they are adults. Personally, I’ve been staying up until three o’clock in the morning to complete assignments from my teachers, after three o’clock in the morning I dozed off to sleep. Truly it cuts my sleep time, which cuts into family time and extracurricular activities because I have to make up on my sleep and I am frequently late to school.
